TOKYO, May 9 /PRNewswire/ — Sony computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that the cumulative worldwide shipment of the Gran Turismo(TM) franchise, a genre-defining racing and car-life simulator available on PlayStation(R), PlayStation(R)2, and PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(R)) computer entertainment systems, has exceeded 50 million units as of April 30, 2008. This remarkable sales figure was achieved in just 10 years and 4 months since the launch of the first title in the franchise - Gran Turismo, in December 1997.
The Gran Turismo franchise, from the original Gran Turismo to the latest Gran Turismo(TM) 5 Prologue, has continued to evolve alongside the PlayStation platforms. With its outstanding game play, beautiful graphics and the true to life driving feel, the franchise is recognized as the world’s number one automotive game title on the PlayStation format, receiving high regard not just from game fans, but also from professional racing drivers and people in the automobile industry.
The seventh installment of the world’s best-selling racing franchise, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue introduces entirely new entertainment modes by taking advantage of the broadband network, such as online head-to-head racing for up to 16 players, “GRAN TURISMO-TV”; a new in-game online channel that delivers automotive video contents from around the globe, and downloadable additional contents including new cars and courses, only possible on PS3. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue has recorded strong sales since the first launch in Japan in December, 2007, followed by North America and Europe in Spring of 2008, with more than 2 million units of cumulative shipment worldwide and contributing to the further expansion of the PS3 platform.
For all Gran Turismo fans around the world, SCEI and the developer of the Gran Turismo series — Polyphony Digital Inc., will continue hereon to vigorously promote development of the Gran Turismo series, which can be expected to evolve even further through the PS3 platform and broadband network environment.
“Initially, Gran Turismo was an ‘alternative’ racing game, kind of an outsider in the genre,” said Kazunori Yamauchi, Producer of Gran Turismo. “And we made it thinking that it would be okay as long as it reached out to ‘the select few who would agree with us.’ So this figure — 50 million units — is simply astounding. If you go to a game store and look for a particular package, and pay for it at the cash register, though the time may be very brief, it still takes at least 3 minutes or so. It’s simply mind boggling and hard to believe that this has been repeated 50 million times all around the world in the last 10 years. I would really like to thank all the fans who have supported the Gran Turismo series over the years, for all their passion and love of the game. We’d like to continue making every effort to create cutting edge, high quality games, so that we don’t disappoint anyone’s expectations.”

Absolute Helps Arizona’s Fastest Growing School District Combat Computer Theft

May 31st, 2008 by admin

VANCOUVER, May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Absolute(R) Software Corporation, the leading provider of firmware-based, patented computer Theft Recovery, Data Protection and Secure Asset Tracking(TM) solutions, today announced that Dysart Unified School District, Arizona’s fastest growing district, is using Computrace(R)Complete(TM) to manage its notebook computer population, deter theft and recover computers should they go missing.
As with a growing number of school districts across North America, Dysart Unified School District recognizes that technology will play a major role in the livelihood of its students. As a result, Dysart is moving aggressively toward making HP notebook computers an everyday learning tool for its 23,000 students. To track, monitor and manage more than 3,000 notebooks, Dysart Unified School District, uses Absolute Software’s flagship product ComputraceComplete.
“In schools, laptops are becoming as common as textbooks, but replacing a missing textbook costs a fraction of replacing a missing computer,” said John Livingston, Chairman and CEO of Absolute Software. “With Computrace, school districts can give their students the advantages of a laptop program and avoid unnecessary expense by keeping track of these valuable assets.”
ComputraceComplete is an effective computer security and tracking solution. It protects both PCs and Macs, providing reliable visibility into every computer in the district - leading to enhanced security, simplified inventorying and regulatory compliance. Should a computer go missing, the Absolute Theft Recovery Team uses information sent via Computrace to track the computer and engage local law enforcement to physically recover it and return it to the district’s staff.
“Having made a major investment in new HP laptops, one of the options we had for keeping track of them was ComputraceComplete from Absolute Software,” said the district’s Director of Information Technology Evan Allred. “It uses the Internet to help us track each computer, where it is located, who is logging in and, should one go missing, where it has been taken. We just report the missing computer to Absolute and they work with local law enforcement to find it and recover it for us. We can also inventory our computers at any time - which is an amazing feature for helping us with our budgets and appropriately allocating new computers to schools.”
Dysart Unified School District and Absolute Software have already had a successful computer recovery, “We were impressed with our first experience working with Absolute’s recovery service,” said Allred. “They literally looked after everything from the moment we let them know it was missing to the point where we could go pick it up at the Surprise (Arizona) Police Department. In the past, we wouldn’t have had a chance of recovering that laptop, but the sheer speed with which it was found in this case should be a major deterrent for would-be thieves.”
For more information about this recovery and the relationship between the two organizations, a case study can be found at .

Efficient Computer Use Can Help Save the Planet

May 30th, 2008 by admin

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, May 29 /PRNewswire/ — Our use of PCs and other IT products has a significant impact on the
climate. The impact worldwide equals that of the entire aviation sector. A
more efficient use of IT products and climate friendly purchases of new
equipment could reduce the climate impact by more than 80 per cent, according
to a new study by TCO Development.

(Logo:
)

“The 1000 million computer monitors that are in use all over the world
generate 53 million tons of CO2, and need as much electric power as the
yearly consumption of Sweden (10 million citizens). This clearly shows that
the use of IT products has a negative impact on the environment, but also
that by changing the way we use these products, we can be part of the
solution,” says Haakan Nordin, Project Manager for Climate and Environment at
TCO Development.

TCO Development lists three easy steps that everyone can take, and that
taken together could reduce the climate impact from computers with more than
80 per cent.

- Choose computer equipment based on power consumption in active mode. An
energy efficient desktop PC uses up to 65 per cent less energy than a
standard desktop PC. If energy efficient notebooks are compared with advanced
desktop PCs used for CAD/CAM the difference is over 1,000 per cent.

- Activate energy settings on your computer. 65 per cent of the CO2
emissions are attributed to computers that are not turned off or do not have
energy save functions activated. The simplest solution is to use notebook
computer settings, even when using a desktop.

- Turn off your computer when not in use. User studies show that an
average office computer is turned on, but not in use, more than 50 per cent
of the time.

“If we change our ways of using IT equipment, and make full use of all
the environmental features of this technology we can reduce CO2 emissions
without any impact on our daily lives,” comments Haakan Nordin.

TCO Development - The TCO certification system makes it easy to choose IT
and office equipment that is designed for the benefit of both the user and
the environment. The TCO certification is internationally recognised and
products bearing the TCO label can be found throughout the world.

New Book for IT Professionals Features 20 Alternative Careers Highly Insulated From Offshore Outsourcing

May 30th, 2008 by admin

WESTPORT, Conn., April 24 /PRNewswire/ — With offshore outsourcing increasing and the U.S. economy in a recession, computer professionals are seeing fewer opportunities in the IT job market. Some are considering a career change from IT, but concerned about wasting their investment in their education and experience. That concern should be dispelled by “Debugging Your Information Technology(TM) Career” (Elegant Fix Press — ), a book demonstrating that computer professionals can leverage their experience to enter many fields other than traditional information technology careers, while reducing or eliminating their vulnerability to offshoring.
Janice Weinberg, the author, is a career consultant () formerly with IBM and GE, whose background as a systems programmer and application developer enabled her to identify the 20 careers she describes. While most of them aren’t usually thought of as computer-related jobs, computer proficiency is a key qualification for success in each. For example:
— A business analyst or software developer who guided finance and/or
sales staff in defining their information technology requirements
could become a global procurement project manager supporting those
functions.
— A software architect’s knowledge of best practices in systems design
would be a strong asset in a technology due diligence position.
— A network security administrator’s experience would be quite valuable
in a cyberliability insurance broker or underwriter role.
— An IT professional’s ability to assess the commercial potential of new
computer technology would be a highly desirable qualification in a
technology sector equity analyst candidate.

Most of the careers can be entered without further education beyond a BS in information technology, management information systems, or computer science. Several require a certification. Some readers may be motivated to become an attorney specializing in computer law. Many of the fields can be springboards for consulting practices — or new revenue streams for those already employed as computer consultants or contract programmers. New graduates with computer-related degrees and students excelling on computer skills assessment tests will realize that the opportunities accessible to them go well beyond those typically associated with information technology and computer science jobs.
As Weinberg describes each career, readers will:

— Be able to imagine themselves in the field by reading the hour-by-hour
Typical Workday
— Understand the degree to which a recession can affect job security,
and learn strategies for minimizing or avoiding any negative impact
— Learn the extent to which offshoring is already happening, and what
the field’s future vulnerability will likely be

Readers will learn job-hunting techniques tailored to specific fields, including guidance in identifying employers and determining the most relevant aspects of their experience to highlight in their resumes, cover letters, and interviews.
While there are many books providing IT career advice, Weinberg’s gives new — and much broader — meaning to the term “computer job,” demonstrating that an IT professional’s knowledge constitutes precious currency in a world dependent on computer technology.

Fujitsu Introduces World’s Most Advanced Full Disk Encryption Technology for Laptop Hard Disk Drive Data Protection

May 29th, 2008 by admin

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 21 /PRNewswire/ — Fujitsu computer Products of America, Inc., a leading supplier of innovative computer products including hard disk drives, peripherals and biometric security solutions, today announced full disk encryption (FDE) for its 2.5″ 7,200RPM SATA hard disk drive (HDD) line-up with up to 320GB(1), offering the industry’s highest security standard for data at rest. The Fujitsu MHZ2 CJ series is the first HDD in the world to support the hardware-based AES-256 bit encryption standard, enabling the HDD to provide the strongest data protection from unauthorized access by setting a password. Fujitsu’s line of highly reliable and efficient hard disk drives now includes an HDD that combines maximum data security features with high performance, resulting in an ideal computing environment.
“The cost and consequences associated with DataJacking are rising, but the problem is preventable,” according to John Rydning, IDC’s research director for HDDs. “Fujitsu’s new hardware-based encrypted hard disk drive for notebook PCs exemplifies a simple and easy to implement solution that will substantially reduce the risk of DataJacking.”
Current software-based security solutions have a potential weakness, because encryption keys exist in system memory whenever the system is being used. Also, encryption is computationally intensive, which impacts the system performance. In the Fujitsu MHZ2 CJ series, encryption and decryption are performed by the hardware of the drive instead of by the computer’s CPU and memory. The key used to encrypt and decrypt data is cryptographically regenerated only when the correct password is received at power-on, and is unattainable when the system is powered off. The drive automatically encrypts and decrypts the data with no impact on the system performance. Hardware- based HDD encryption is the most effective security method available for mobile computing.
“With industry reports estimating 700,000 laptops stolen every year and the associated costs reaching $5.4 billion, organizations are facing a clear and pressing security threat,” said David James, vice president, advanced product engineering, Fujitsu computer Products of America, Inc. “The Fujitsu MHZ2 CJ series creates a simple-to-use and virtually impenetrable data lock down, with no encryption keys remaining on the machine when it is powered off. The data on the disk drive remains inaccessible without the password, delivering advanced protection for the organization owning the machine, and the critical data for which they are responsible.”
Along with the full disk encryption protection, the Fujitsu MHZ2 CJ series also addresses organizations’ needs to securely and instantly make data on the drive inaccessible when redeploying or disposing of the drive. The advanced secure erase feature immediately invalidates every piece of data just by changing the in-drive encryption key, making the stored data completely indecipherable. With this immediate and secure erasure, the drive significantly saves time and costs for users and companies.
Fujitsu is also an active board member of the Trusted Computing Group (TCG), which is a non-profit industry standards organization that focuses on developing, defining, and promoting open specifications for IT-benefiting trusted computing. Fujitsu will jointly work on the initiatives to support and promote the standardization and development of an ever better security solution.
