Mercury Computer Systems Introduces Gateway for 10 Gigabit Ethernet to Embedded Processing

June 25th, 2008 by admin

CHELMSFORD, Mass., June 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Mercury computer Systems, Inc. , a leading provider of high-performance, embedded computing solutions for complex image, sensor, and signal processing applications, announced availability of the SR-110 10GE VXS Gateway, a revolutionary network-centric building block for VXS systems.
To maximize the effectiveness of new, sophisticated sensor technologies, system designers are using 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) for fast and flexible image/data distribution, from any sensor to any authorized user. Despite its considerable bandwidth, however, 10 Gigabit Ethernet does not deliver the low- latency, deterministic communications required by real-time processing. A different type of protocol, such as RapidIO(R), must be used for real-time signal processing. The design challenge is to create a network-based solution that can seamlessly and transparently move data between 10GE and RapidIO, so the overall sensor network solution can employ the advantages of both fabrics. To make this type of processing available on a sensor network requires a gateway.
As an example, for network-attached multiprocessing, the SR-110 10GE VXS Gateway from Mercury automatically transports the network data (via 10GE) into the VXS chassis, which in turn streams the data into the serial RapidIO fabric, making the data available to all VXS compute nodes in the chassis. After user application computations are complete, the data is transported out of the system via the Gateway to the 10GE network.
The SR-110 10GE VXS Gateway self-boots at power-up, and is user-configurable. No other programming or user intervention is required to enable high-bandwidth data streams into and out of the Gateway.
“With the SR-110 10GE VXS Gateway, we’ve taken Mercury’s proven ability to capture and process large volumes of sensor data in real time to the sensor network architecture paradigm, enabling fast, flexible and transparent data movement between the 10GE and RapidIO fabrics,” said Ian Dunn, Chief Technologist, Advanced Computing Solutions, Mercury computer Systems, Inc. “By deploying the Gateway in VXS, developers can implement a single, platform-wide Ethernet network that streams sensor data to C4I (command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence) applications.”
Based on the Freescale MPC8548 processor, the Mercury SR-110 10GE VXS Gateway is a highly integrated platform that includes a Power Architecture(TM) core, serial RapidIO, Gigabit Ethernet controllers, and an integrated DDR2 memory interface. With MultiCore(TM) Plus software, the SR-110 10GE VXS Gateway supports both gateway and bridging modes. Support features include:
– bridging/forwarding of all Ethernet frames (Transparent Layer 2 switch in bridge mode),
— broadcast and multicast with IGMP v2 snooping in both directions, and
— redundant/failover gateway support.

Infortrend Qualifies Fujitsu 2.5-inch SAS Hard Disk Drives for Use with its Small Form Factor RAID Subsystems

June 4th, 2008 by admin

SAN JOSE and SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 3 /PRNewswire/ — Networked storage expert Infortrend(R) (Public TPE: 2495) and Fujitsu computer Products of America, Inc., one of the world’s leading suppliers of innovative computer products, today announced that the Fujitsu MBC2073 RC, MBC2036 RC and MBB2147 RC, enterprise-class, 2.5-inch SAS hard disk drives have passed qualification testing for use with Infortrend EonStor(R) (ES) B12 series RAID subsystems. Available in 36GB (1), 73GB or 147GB capacities, these 15,000 and 10,000 RPM, Small Form Factor (SFF) SAS drives combine with ES B12 arrays to give IT managers an ideal storage system for applications that demand efficient space utilization, low power consumption, and 24/7 reliability and performance.
For years, 3.5-inch disk drives have been the dominant choice for enterprise storage arrays. At the end of 2007, Infortrend announced the industry’s first 2.5-inch RAID subsystems: the EonStor B12S-R/G1030 SAS-to-SAS and the B12F-R/G1430 Fibre Channel-to-SAS arrays. These smaller, more efficient arrays have received positive reviews and derive many of their benefits from the advantages of the SFF drives they house. The 2.5-inch Fujitsu drives are 70 percent smaller than conventional 3.5-inch drives, allowing the ES B12 subsystems to deliver twice the throughput in the same footprint. Additionally, the SFF drives use 40 to 50 percent less power and generate less heat when operating, thereby reducing the cost of cooling.
“Infortrend and Fujitsu share a commitment to consistently deliver better storage solutions to the market through our close cooperation in product research and development,” said Thomas Kao, director of global product marketing and planning at Infortrend Technology Inc. “Integrating high-performance Fujitsu drives into an EonStor B12 subsystem unites industry-leading technology that satisfies the needs of IOPS-intensive and space-critical environments.”
“Infortrend has demonstrated the benefits of Small Form Factor hard disk drive technology, by launching 2.5-inch arrays into the RAID market,” said Lorne Wilson, senior vice president, sales and marketing at Fujitsu computer Products of America. “2.5-inch SAS hard disk drives continue to prove greater energy efficiency verses traditional 3.5-inch hard disk drives, deliver higher performance and utilize less rack space.”

Fujitsu Delivers New 250GB(1) 2.5″ SATA Hard Disk Drive Series With 24-Hour Continuous Operation

June 2nd, 2008 by admin

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 19 /PRNewswire/ — Fujitsu computer Products of America, Inc., a leading supplier of innovative computer products including hard disk drives, peripherals and biometric security solutions, today announced the release of its 2.5″ hard disk drive (HDD) series line up that offers support for 24-hour non-stop operation with capacities up to 250GB. The new Fujitsu 2.5″ MHZ2-BK 7200 RPM and the 2.5″ MHZ2-BS 5400 RPM SATA series features enhanced performance for extended duty disk drive usage for business critical and industrial applications that require higher storage capacity.
“While it’s self-evident that all HDDs get ‘rested’ when not being used (and are built to a ‘good enough’ duty cycle), it is equally true that there are many business-critical applications that do not offer any ‘rest’ time … and cannot afford any downtime,” commented Mark Peters, an analyst with the Enterprise Strategy Group. “Such extreme operating demands clearly require the very highest-duty-cycle disks designed specifically to support such ‘always on’ environments. Fujitsu’s newly enhanced, extended duty hard disk drives are custom designed to address this market need for continuous operation, where a regular ‘good enough’ approach is simply not good enough.”
Organizations are increasingly requiring 24×7 operations from their hard disk drives. With its new HDD offerings, Fujitsu directly addresses these demands with each model providing support for specific applications. The high performance MHZ2-BK 7200 RPM model is maximized for blade servers, nearline storage devices, telecommunication devices, and other data-intensive business critical applications that require 24-hour operation. The MHZ2-BS 5400 RPM series is designed to support industrial applications with 24×7 access including surveillance cameras, industrial PCs, POS systems, ATMs and robotics. Both the MHZ2-BK and MHZ2-BS series have extremely low power consumption, providing the highest level of energy efficiency available. Fujitsu is the only company currently offering RV (rotational vibration) compensation technology for 2.5″ SATA HDDs, which minimizes the adverse effects of vibration to maximize performance of applications under demanding operating conditions.
“For five years, Fujitsu has been delivering industry-leading 2.5″ drives with 24×7 operation capability. With the addition of the MHZ2-BK and MHZ2-BS series, we continue to leverage our extensive experience and pioneering technology to meet the demand for high-performance drives with greater storage capacity,” said Joel Hagberg, vice president, marketing and business development, Fujitsu computer Products of America, Inc. “These new drives offer greater energy efficiency and are part of the Fujitsu Green Policy Innovation initiative that promotes products and services that help customers minimize their ecological footprint and reduce energy costs.”
Pricing and Availability
The Fujitsu MHZ2-BS HDD series is currently available and the MHZ2-BK series will be available in July 2008. Pricing is available upon request.

Fujitsu Introduces World’s Most Advanced Full Disk Encryption Technology for Laptop Hard Disk Drive Data Protection

May 29th, 2008 by admin

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 21 /PRNewswire/ — Fujitsu computer Products of America, Inc., a leading supplier of innovative computer products including hard disk drives, peripherals and biometric security solutions, today announced full disk encryption (FDE) for its 2.5″ 7,200RPM SATA hard disk drive (HDD) line-up with up to 320GB(1), offering the industry’s highest security standard for data at rest. The Fujitsu MHZ2 CJ series is the first HDD in the world to support the hardware-based AES-256 bit encryption standard, enabling the HDD to provide the strongest data protection from unauthorized access by setting a password. Fujitsu’s line of highly reliable and efficient hard disk drives now includes an HDD that combines maximum data security features with high performance, resulting in an ideal computing environment.
“The cost and consequences associated with DataJacking are rising, but the problem is preventable,” according to John Rydning, IDC’s research director for HDDs. “Fujitsu’s new hardware-based encrypted hard disk drive for notebook PCs exemplifies a simple and easy to implement solution that will substantially reduce the risk of DataJacking.”
Current software-based security solutions have a potential weakness, because encryption keys exist in system memory whenever the system is being used. Also, encryption is computationally intensive, which impacts the system performance. In the Fujitsu MHZ2 CJ series, encryption and decryption are performed by the hardware of the drive instead of by the computer’s CPU and memory. The key used to encrypt and decrypt data is cryptographically regenerated only when the correct password is received at power-on, and is unattainable when the system is powered off. The drive automatically encrypts and decrypts the data with no impact on the system performance. Hardware- based HDD encryption is the most effective security method available for mobile computing.
“With industry reports estimating 700,000 laptops stolen every year and the associated costs reaching $5.4 billion, organizations are facing a clear and pressing security threat,” said David James, vice president, advanced product engineering, Fujitsu computer Products of America, Inc. “The Fujitsu MHZ2 CJ series creates a simple-to-use and virtually impenetrable data lock down, with no encryption keys remaining on the machine when it is powered off. The data on the disk drive remains inaccessible without the password, delivering advanced protection for the organization owning the machine, and the critical data for which they are responsible.”
Along with the full disk encryption protection, the Fujitsu MHZ2 CJ series also addresses organizations’ needs to securely and instantly make data on the drive inaccessible when redeploying or disposing of the drive. The advanced secure erase feature immediately invalidates every piece of data just by changing the in-drive encryption key, making the stored data completely indecipherable. With this immediate and secure erasure, the drive significantly saves time and costs for users and companies.
Fujitsu is also an active board member of the Trusted Computing Group (TCG), which is a non-profit industry standards organization that focuses on developing, defining, and promoting open specifications for IT-benefiting trusted computing. Fujitsu will jointly work on the initiatives to support and promote the standardization and development of an ever better security solution.
